What’s the saying? “Love grows best in little spaces”. Truthfully I think that’s a sentiment made up by small house owners to make them feel better about their lack of space. As the owner of a small-ish house, I know first hand that space management is the key to contentment.
If you’re looking for more floor space in your home and also lack storage, a banquette may be the solution. Banquettes work great in mud rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and look particularly fantastic underneath a wall of windows. We built this corner banquette with storage to allow more space when entering this kitchen/dining combo. I’ve always been a fan of banquettes and building one has been a goal of mine for some time. We searched the web for plans and found them from HGTV that were fairly simple. The cost of the lumber was about $60 and the tools needed were pretty standard.
Painting the banquette a bright white to match the rest of the woodwork in this house was a decision that we went back and forth with a bit. In the end, it was the right decision as I love the way it looks with the round oak pedestal table. When we have visitors the table opens to allow more room and extra chairs can be added. The cushions provide additional comfort but this little nook looks great with only a few pillows too. This was a two-weekend project that added space, style, and a custom look to this kitchen. Highly recommend!
