Thrifting is cool

Thrifting is cool

Feeling like your home is a little “ho hum”, isn’t unique, or fails to show off your personality? I hear that a lot. I’ve been in some beautifully styled homes and although everything is just perfect I often feel uninspired by the lack of personality. I’m happy to say that my number one comment from my clients is that I’ve “captured their style” and “enhanced their home’s vibe”. Nothing makes me happier.

For me, styling a home goes way beyond picking the right colors or finding the perfect sofa. I believe every space gives off energy; and finding the right energy for the homeowner and the space is the key. When I study a room to restyle, I look for inspiration in the architecture, the art, the rug, the light fixtures; basically anywhere in the room! Sometimes a lack of inspiration leads me to antique stores or art galleries to find “my muse”.

When I suggest visiting antique stores many people conjure up an image of grandma’s rocking chair. No worries! Most people find something they love; whether they have modern, traditional, contemporary or eclectic style. Please lose the image of the creepy attic!

The sweet Guernsey cow painting below is an original oil I found at a local antique store. It adds something unique to this kitchen nook that no one else is going to have. The room is styled in black and white and it fits right in.

Sometimes the personality comes by way of the furniture. When styling a room, I start with the sofa, the coffee table, maybe the end tables. Once all that is in place, look for a side chair or a garden stool that may add some variety. Perhaps the chandelier or the lamps may make your room special. In this photo, these rattan chairs were found at a vintage store for a fantastic price. I had the cushions made and added a gorgeous silk pillow for a pop of color. I promise you, your neighbor won’t have these side chairs!

Another place I like to hunt for unique finds is estate sales. The chair in the cover photo home office came from the City of Minneapolis’s thrift sale. This cool, comfy chair came from the public library and I reupholstered it myself. I could have easily used a black roller chair often found in offices or just added a chair from the dining room table. This unique little piece is stylish, functional, and adds oodles of charm to the room.
